silence
Set in England at the end of the first millennium, SILENCE is a dark comedy about survival, love, and the roles we are forced to play.
In a world of cross-dressing, hallucinogenic drugs, confused sexuality, alternative religions, and apocalyptic dreams. Viking raids threaten a kingdom already on the brink of collapse. A paranoid King Ethelred refuses to leave his bed. A disgraced Ymma of Normandy and Silence of Cumbria are forced to marry. What begins as a punishment quickly shifts into something hopeful after a life-changing revelation on their wedding night.
But events conspire to send them fleeing across a country sliding into chaos, accompanied by a priest clinging to faith, a soldier searching for purpose, and a servant longing for escape.
“The descent into harsh interrogations of imperialist violence and patriarchal ruthlessness is amplified by an intuitive, atmospheric soundscape by John Sharp, sparsely but precisely used to drive the emotional pulse of the show.” -The Scoop
“Plaudits are also deserved for John Augustine Sharp and Sam Martin’s respective lighting and sound design, especially in the transitions, giving the play an unrelenting momentum not unlike the opening titles of Gasper Noe’s, Enter the Void.” -Australian Arts Review
